Govt gets Rs 30,229 crore for BWA spectrum; BSNL yet to pay

On Tuesday, 22nd June 2010, the Government of India has collected Rs. 30,229.51 crore as a fee towards the license for Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) spectrum.Excluding BSNL, all other bidders has paid the fees, with Mukesh Ambani-led RIL''s internet arm Infotel alone coughing up Rs. 12,847.77 crore.BSNL has a total due amounting to Rs. 8,313.80 crore.The government has confirmed that no exemption has been extended to either of the two telecom PSUs from paying for 3G and BWA spectrum.The official sources had said that BSNL had asked for exemption from paying for the spectrum but the same was rejected by the government.With the latest collection, the government has received Rs. 97,948.46 crore from the sale of spectrum for both 3G and BWA.After the BSNL clear all its dues, the total collection would go up to Rs. 106,262.26 crore.The 3G auction has fetched Rs. 67,718.95 crore.The players like Infotel, Bharti Airtel has paid Rs. 3,314.36 crore, Qualcomm Rs. 4,912.54 crore, MTNL has paid a fees of Rs. 4533.97 crore and Aircel has paid Rs. 3,438.01 crore.Infotel was the only pan-India winner for BWA spectrum in the auction that concluded on June 11.Within hours of ending of the BWA auction, Mukesh Ambani -led Reliance Industries had announced that it will acquire Infotel for Rs. 4,800 crore in a deal that valued the Mahendra Nahata group internet service provider at about Rs. 5,000 crore.As part of the deal, RIL would infuse Rs. 4,800 crore in the company as fresh equity capital to gain 95 % stake.However, it is expected that during the current financial year, investment in the Indian telecom sector will increase at $40 bn.This is as India presses on to build a network of 1 bn mobile phones over the next 2 years.This was said by the Telecom Equipment & Services Export Promotion Council.Meanwhile, this investment, up from $20 bn witnessed last year, would be for carrying on the development of 3G, Broadband Wireless Access and expansion of existing networks.Moreover, the Indian government set up the Telecom Equipment & Services Export Promotion Council in order to promote export of equipment and services. Telecom operators had paid Rs. 7,605.61 crore as licence fee till January, 2010. As per DoT data, operators paid Rs. 7,016.59 crore in 2006-07, Rs. 8,826.45 crore in 2007-08 and Rs. 9,759.81 crore in 2008-09.For the GSM segment, the average revenue per user (ARPU) per month has decreased by 12.4 % to Rs 144 in the October-December quarter from Rs 164 during the previous quarter.ARPU for the CDMA segment declined by 7 % to Rs 82 in the three-month period.The gross revenue for the telecom operators increased by 2.32 % to Rs 39,756.64 crore.The Adjusted Gross Revenue increased by just 0.04 % to Rs 29,125.67 crore for the said quarter.

Due to the lack of large buying commitments by most of the traders, the market lost its direction in leading grades. The sheet rubber closed unchanged at Rs 184 a kg amidst scattered transactions. The domestic rubber futures of September series surged to touch a high of Rs 177.28 and low of Rs 174.40 a kg for RSS 4. In the international market, RSS 3 fell due to the strengthening of yen against the dollar and on concern that demand for the commodity used to make auto tyres may weaken.
